Rants and Rambles

The randomness of a confused mind

Hi ho and hi diddle dee dee

This is a generic area. Area 1.
It's a curious little box on top of all my posts, that I am suppose to fill with witty ramblings & observations. Or so I was made to believe.
But not really having much of those spontaneously I decided to type this here. Which is pretty random. Would you like to buy a little porcelain elephant?

The Cake Song

Posted By on June 29, 2012

Back due to popular demand, I present the ‘Cake Song’

Created with the Songify App
It received quiet a few likes on Songify and made no 1, but unfortunately due to the current flagging system, everything flagged is taken down without being reviewed.
So people use this to make their way to no 1, by just flagging the competition.
I contacted Songify and they confirmed it was flagged without reason & will be reinstated once they review their flagging system.
One day..
Well it’s a free app, I was surprised they actually got back to me in the first place!

my medical mayhem

Posted By on January 12, 2012

Oh boy what a day.
Can’t say I was feeling too great this morning & with the taste of blood in my mouth & a bruise on my tongue I wasn’t in a great mood in general.
Then I couldn’t leave for work because Jack decided to hide on me. Of course I’m such a silly cat owner that I actually worried she might have jumped off the balcony rather then gone hiding behind the old couch in the ironing room… I left for work, checking the hedge under the balcony before walking away. No sign.
Then, half down the road I realised I should have used the monkey!
The monkey, a slingshot toy in the shape of a monkey screeches when hitting something. The screech causes Jack to come running into the room. She’s always easy to alert by noise… So I turned around, hurrying back to the apartment. Knowing I would spend all day at work worrying about her anyway. It took three throws of the monkey to get her to come out.

So off to work I ran.
Still feeling flustered way after ten I noticed little brown dots on the back of my left hand. Also known as punctate bleeding.
These normally only ocure when I have an outbreak of ITP.
Don’t expect you to read the whole Wikipedia article so here’s a summary for all of you that don’t know yet:
For no determined reason (so far) my white blood cells that normally fight off intruders, bacteria & viruses get bored and start eradicating my platelets. This causes me to be more prone to bruising, gum- & nosebleeds and if I would get a nasty internal or external wound it means not enough platelets are there to close it & I could potentially bleed to death. These are the facts.

I had it twice in my life so far.

1999
Started in June.
Different treatments were tried, worst of all cortisone. After all of these were unsuccessful I had my spleen removed at the beginning of October.
Reason for the splenectomy: that’s where the platelets where killed.
Had to stay in Hospital from June to August & again for a few weeks around the operation.

2007
Started in July after I had a bad cold & was stupid enough to take Antibiotics. Nobody can prove it but I believe it threw my body off kilter. Again different medications were tried. I was scanned to see how much of my spleen was still there & if it would make sense to remove this as well.
But they decided to leave my ‘left over’- spleen be & in the end went with a 4 week course of chemotherapy.
2 weeks after the last helping my platelets came up again.
I was released from hospital after about 7 weeks but still had to attend the outpatient department for regular bloodtests.
My platelets did not recover as well as in 1999 and after another dip in 2008/2009 I was put onto steroids (like cortisone) to give them another boost. Steroids are not nice…
The platelets went back to normal & that’s the shortest I can make this story.

Summary
Unfortunately both hospital stays meant daily bloodtests (and my veins are very hard to find), blood transfusions, platelet transfusions, endless boredom in hospitals and of course bone marrow extractions..

I hope this explains a bit why I’m dreading these little brown dots on my hand, the easy bruising of the last days and the taste of blood in my mouth so much.

We are about to move, I can not just be locked away for 2 month again.
Sooner or later I will have to tell my doctor about it.
But this time I will fight to make sure they treat it in the outpatients.
I don’t have a physical job, I don’t work all on my own, there’s no reason for me to miss work, pay, move, life..

Maybe if I sit here for a while & relax it will just go away…

Twitter Battlefield

Posted By on April 10, 2011

As you all know, I’m tweeting about and like everybody else mostly going on about pretty useless everyday stuff.
And that’s what I think twitter is for. To relieve you of this ‘OH MY GOD I can’t believe I just saw/heard/felt/imagined that & there’s nobody I could tell about it!!‘ feeling.
But now & then you come across people that are not following you but still they took so much offence in your tweet, they think it’s worse an argument.
Little do they know that I’m not really teenager enough to take them serious.
Which doesn’t mean I’m not gonna share the experience with you guys. :)

Background to the story:
10th of April 2011 is Census night.
Every household in Ireland is (apparently) legally obliged to fill in the census form.
I know I’m lazy but still not anti establishment enough to bother not filling it on or starting a legal war about it.
But there was one question where I was surprised it was asked, given the fact that the census form is not anonymous.
And I decided to vent my disbelieve on twitter…

the tweet

the one to start it

With the following consequences:

blah blah

twittycuffs

I just had to share that with all you guys.
I mean honestly, does this person believe just because I consider skipping one question I risk a court appearance?
If that would be so both police & courts must have so much time on their hands that we live in a crime free paradise!
As if..
Can’t believe I even bothered removing the Twittername of my new friend! Ain’t I adult? :)

Enjoy!

double rainbow OMG!

Posted By on September 17, 2010

The other day, (starting this post like a thought for the day sermon) I walked home from work and towards a splendid double rainbow.
And of course I am aware of both the original video Double Rainbow and the wonderful song, which incidentally I downloaded from iTunes.
It’s fun & I thought the guys who mixed it are so creative they deserve to be paid.

Anyway, this is neither here nor there, so let’s get back to the topic of rainbows.
I think I can say I have seen my fair share of rainbows over the years. Through windows, from balconies, out the front door, in the garden. Have drawn, painted, photographed and worn them. Produced them myself with shards of glass, crystals and of course the garden hose.
I wouldn’t even been surprised if one day I end up with a bit of rainbow tattooed somewhere.

As a guesstimate I would have to say that 75% maybe even 80% of rainbows in my memory have been double rainbows.

But I’m asking you now, have you ever seen in your life a real, authentic triple rainbow?

Something in me is wondering if triple rainbows are actually physically possible. I mean if so then at least with the garden hose they should be pretty common and easy to create, shouldn’t they?

I then searched the internet and found an interesting article.

I’d just like to quote part of this:

You’d see the primary and secondary rainbow only if the Sun is behind you. But the third (k=3) and fourth (k=4) rainbows are formed behind your back, the fourth just above the third. You’ll never see them, as they are much fainter than the first two, and you’d have to look in the direction of the Sun, where a glare from the sunlight will make an observation impossible. The fifth (k=5) and sixth (k=6) rainbows form again in front of you, the fifth just below the secondary and partially overlapping it, and the sixth below the primary. But again, you’ll never observe them outdoors, since the fifth one is only 10% as bright as the primary, and the sixth only 8% as bright as the primary. Note that the relatively common secondary rainbow (k=2) is about 43% as bright as the primary, yet it is hard to see it most of the time.

They are actually talking that in a Laboratory they are being able to produce 13 rainbows from single drops suspended from wires and even up to 19 in thin, falling streams of water.
Talking about a fantasy novel backdrop eh?

I hope I will not report about my deteriorating eyesight in the next post because I have started looking towards the sun whenever I see a double rainbow now.

But I can’t understand why they consider double rainbows as ‘a rarer sight’? I find they occur quiet often, make a single rainbow more or a rarity in my opinion.

Anyway, this is me on rainbows. You’ve probably noticed how I didn’t even bother to apologise for my long silence in this blog, because, well, it doesn’t really matter does it as long as I get back to posting sooner or later.

What have you been up to?

Posted By on March 24, 2010

Well it was time for an update and as I have a bit of time I thought to give it a go.
No clue what to write about yet as my thoughts are all over the place of late.

I seem to be longing for a new hobby.
Last week I thought I might give sewing a try with the ultimate goal of producing plushies.
But I don’t really have a place to put the sewing machine we have on top of the wardrobe.
On the weekend I got my hair dyed into stripes with the help of my friends Bearlio and Ruby.
This week I started looking up moulds for chocolate making & moulds for statue making and got fascinated by that thought.
Wonder if ice sculptures or architecture will be next.

I definitely need some kind of hobby that gets me away from the PC.
Looking at this blog you might think I’m only checking the net once a week or less, but the truth is I spend nearly every waking moment on it.

Now don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy a bit of obsession now and then. The book you can’t put down, the TV show on DVD that you make a daily routine, the video game that follows you into your dreams..

All these obsessions last a few weeks at best and then another takes over.
But my current ‘dossing around on the net, playing facebook games’ is going on long enough and way to uncreative to be unbroken until the release of Fable III.

So I have to find something to distract myself with.
And, even more important, I need to gather the will to not let failure in early attempts make me give up.

Speaking of which, did you know there’s a software that let’s you create plush toys and then transforms them into the shapes you need to cut out of fabric to actually produce it?
Bummer is, it’s for PC and not for Mac. And I don’t think our old laptop would be able to handle it.
Design System for Plush Toys
The biggest drawback being of course that this software demo is about 3 years old and people complaining that it is very glitchy.
A pity really that it never seemed to have taken off. I would even consider buying a full version of the software if it would do what it shows in the video.

So yeah, here I am.
33 years old, navy hair with turquoise stripes that’s about 2 inches long, starting to collect YooHoos and Hard Rock Cafe Pins, working on a design for my second (and probably last) ever tattoo.

I actually only own 2 YooHoos at the moment and wouldn’t really buy any bigger then the 5” ones, but I can see this collection grow over the year.
What got me into the HRC Pins I can’t say either, I just started bidding on a handful of really cool Dragon ones on EBay and now I gotta get some kind of display frame for them before buying more.

I always hoped I would be able to make my blog or webpage my hobby and start creating pages about my cats, collections and other stuff but this hasn’t happened yet.

How on earth can you concentrate on anything when having the internet at your finger tips?
Never ending streams of information, bizarre stories, funny pictures, LOLCats & T-Shirt designs. Maybe I’m just lacking willpower but I just find myself checking things, looking stuff up, confirming facts, investigating things, reading up stories….
And playing pointless point & clicks on Facebook.

A little more worrying obsession of mine at the moment is Internet shopping.
It mainly manifests itself in T-Shirts, hair dyes and the odd EBay knick-knack like hats with cat ears, clothe dyes, and the afore mentioned Hard Rock Cafe Pins.

The worst things are the partially pointless purchases that cause other purchases to follow.
For example, a few weeks ago I bought a black top-hat in Claire’s (think women’s Equestrian Dressage), removed all the heart & diamond shaped studs from it and am now having the irresistible urge to buy a steam punk style goggle to put around the hat, resting on it’s brim.
What’s so bad about this?
I don’t even wear the hat outside the apartment!

I am really hoping this general catch up rant will mark the beginning of some more regular blogging.
No but.
Thinking positive.
Babbling along..
